Macmillan was founded on the Isle of Arran in 1843.
As Simply The Best is based in the Highlands of Scotland, it seems appropriate to say Macmillan was founded in 1843 by Daniel and Alexander Macmillan, two brothers from the Scottish Isle of Arran. Daniel was the business brain, while Alexander laid the literary foundations.
From these small beginnings sprang a business which can boast of the late Harold Macmillan as its chairman, once retired from the position of Prime Minister. During his time in the late 1960s, an ambitious expansion programme was initiated so that Macmillan now publishes a broad range of award-winning books for children and adults in all categories and format, in over 70 countries.
