Description
The Andean group Kanchay delivers in this album an amazing representation of the folkloric music of Bolivia with simple but effective and straight forward instrumentation and vocal performances.
Based in Switzerland, this five piece Andean band was formed in 1985 by Bolivian songwriter Rene Carrasco (one of the founder members of Mallku de los Andes). As familiar to audiences in Europe as in their native South America, Kanchay are one of the leading exponents of criollo - hybrid sound which blends Spanish guitar rhythms with the indigenous folk music of Bolivian mountain regions.
The haunting melodies produced by traditional Andean wind instruments - pan pipes (zamponas) and quenas - lie at the heart of Kanchay's interpretation of criollo. All the songs on this collection were originated by Rene Carrasco.
