Description

Really lovely bracelet made from Tagua stained purple and fashioned into polished heart shapes - all strung on some stretchy cord. Hand made in the Amazon basin.

The Tagua tree or Ivory Palm grows at the heart of the Amazon. Its fruit is the Tagua Nut, otherwise known as Vegetable Ivory. This nut has been used for buttons, jewellery and carved objects for centuries. The purchase of the nut supports the employment of nearly 35,000 indigenous people and this is a very good incentive for them to maintain the trees. After the nut is harvested it is left to dry for 3 years. It is then cut into manageable pieces followed by shaping, polishing and colouring with natural dyes before assembling into very unusual and colourful pieces of jewellery.

Pronounced TAH-gwa, the nut also has the property of being totally biodegradable!
