Description

Cuba has had a greater impact on popular music and dance worldwide than any other country in Latin America. This album explores the Afro-Cuban roots of salsa and features the best rumba, guaguanco, son, jazz and more from this incredibly rich musical island.

Afro-Cuban All-Stars are a worldwide phenomenon and 'Reconciliación', from their 1999 album, features Buena Vista Social Club stalwarts Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Omara Portuondo and Orlando 'Cachaito' Lopez teaming up with younger Cuban musicians to produce a song that encompasses son, jazz, salsa and even a touch of timba.

Sierra Maestra were originally formed in 1976 by Afro-Cuban All-Stars' Juan de Marcos (tresero) and Cubanismo's Jesus Alemany (trumpeter) to present classic Cuban son to the younger generation. Still popular today they continue to play traditional son and this track is from their latest album Son: Soul Of A Nation, which can be explored on the bonus CD.

Also featuring on The Rough Guide to the Music of Cuba: Azúcar Negra, Elio Revé Jr, Afro Cuban Jazz Project & Osdalgia.
